Conference Motion 2022

Save Our GPs.

Most of the contact that people have with the NHS is with General Practice. These vital services are the first step in diagnosing and treating most patients’ health conditions. This pandemic has shown - more than ever - that our GPs services are essential to a properly functioning society and economy, yet our GP practices are in crisis.  NHS England and the BMA calls for 20,000 more staff to work in primary care excluding GPs. GPs are leaving, stressed, threatened.  People cannot get an appointment to see a GP and must spend hours trying to talk to a medical professional. Conference notes that 12 years of Tory Government have failed our GP services. Conference believes it’s time to support our GP Practice so that everyone can access care when needed and staff who work in this vital area are developed and valued. Our ambition for our GP services should be as far reaching as Bevan's formation of the NHS and cost should not be a barrier to high quality care. We call on the Labour Party to set out a vision, codesigned by the frontbench, our relevant affiliated unions, Labour councillors, and other stakeholders, that:

  • Guarantees an appointment for all citizens.
  • Allows medical professionals to use a variety of appointment types such as virtual or in person based on medical need.
  • Improves pay, terms, and conditions to help recruit and retain those who work in GP services.
  • Recruit 20,000 more staff, full time equivalent to work in primary care excluding GPs.
  • Recruit 6000 more GPs full time equivalent posts.
  • Support universities to provide more places for General Practice, Nurse Practitioners, and other staff roles where a shortage exists.
